Is it dangerous?
That’s tough to say. Most doctors seem to agree that a congenital nevus comes with an increased risk of developing malignant melanoma (skin cancer). The different studies we’ve read seem to be inconclusive insofar as the exact risk goes. However, most agree that the lifetime melanoma risk is proportional to the size of the nevus.
Anikka’s nevus is considered “medium-sized” by most standards. Some studies indicate that her type of nevus carries with it a 5% chance of developing malignant melanoma over her lifetime, while others conclude that a nevus of this size does not significantly increase her risk.
Aside from the physical complications, however, there are the psychological concerns. You can imagine the encounters children with noticeable nevi can expect when they reach school age, especially when the nevus is extremely large or appears on the face (like Ani’s).
